University Avenue Roadside Planting

Project Overview

The University Avenue Roadside Planting project will improve safety and beautify the Interstate 80 underpass in the City of Berkeley in Alameda County. This underpass is the main entry from the interstate into the city. Over the years, it has become dilapidated due to age and the severity of unsheltered encampments in the area.

The communities surrounding the University are underserved, they will directly benefit from beautification enhancements. Caltrans partnered with the City of Berkeley to create this unique beautification project that balances community values, aesthetics, safety, maintainability, resilience, and sustainability.

Enhancements along University Avenue includes:

  • Landscaping and plant establishment
  • Installation of decorative rock features and fencing
  • Installation of gateway monuments

The City has adjacent improvements under construction to improve University Avenue west of the interchange that includes the main entry to the Berkeley Waterfront. The proposed improvements will create a strong connection between the City of Berkeley’s community on the east side of the freeway with the Bay Trail and waterfront on the west of freeway.
