The I-280 & Farallones St. Pedestrian Overcrossing Rehabilitation Begins

San Francisco – Caltrans District 4 is announcing the official start of construction for the I-280 Freeway Rehabilitation and Farallones Street Pedestrian Overcrossing Project in San Francisco next week. Part of the "Fab 4" infrastructure rehabilitation, this comprehensive two-year project will deliver vital safety, accessibility, and structural upgrades to the heavily traveled I-280 corridor. This includes replacing the aging pedestrian Whipple Avenue bridge and performing major upgrades along I-280 freeway between St. Charles Avenue and Brannan Street. When the bridge is completed, it will be renamed the Farallones St. Pedestrian Overcrossing (pictured above) given its proximity to Farallones Street.

Phase 1: Initial Work & Pavement Repairs

Construction has begun. Construction signs are in place and clearing and grubbing is ongoing. Lane lines near the existing overcrossing are on a new alignment. Lane lines will shift a few more times to accommodate construction access needs. Lane reductions will be implemented overnight and intermittent traffic delays are anticipated.

Beginning This Week

Pavement Repairs: Early-stage operations will focus on fixing unsound pavement, repairing potholes, and prepping all I-280 on and off-ramps in San Francisco for subsequent new asphalt concrete paving. Clearing and grubbing work starting this week and pavement slab replacement work to begin next week, west of the U.S.101.

Project Timelines & Concrete Reconstruction

The broader scope of the project targets extensive structural rehabilitation, split into specific milestones over the two-year timeline.

Pavement Repairs: West of U.S.101 will begin next week.

Farallones Street Pedestrian Overcrossing

The new structure will be ADA compliant and designed to current seismic standards. The structure will have appeasing aesthetics to blend with the community and terrain, gentler slopes, and improved lighting. The entrances to the new structure will remain the same. Work on the new structure is anticipated to begin towards the end of summer.

Multiple full freeway closures in one direction at a time are required for this work. All full closures will be overnight for up to 10 hours each. Full closure schedule is not determined yet. Public and community will be informed when closure schedule is determined.

Pavement Repair

• Concrete Pavement: Damaged concrete slabs at the St. Charles Avenue overcrossing will be replaced. This work will begin next week.
• Asphalt Pavement: All asphalt shoulder and ramps between St. Charles Avenue and Brannan Street & 6th St ramps will be repaved. Full ramp closures will be implemented for ramp work. This work will begin this fall.

Bridge Deck Repair

Damaged sections of the bridge deck between U.S.101 and Mariposa ramps will be repaired and then overlayed with 1-inch of polyester concrete. Twelve 55-hour weekend lane reductions will be implemented for this work. This work will begin this fall.

Schedule, Detours, and Driver Guidance

All lane reductions, except for the 55-hour lane reductions will be between 10 PM and 6 AM.

Weekend Freeway Closures & Lane Reductions: Full freeway closures (overnight) and 55-hour lane reductions are required for this work. The public will be informed in advance of these closures.

Detour Information:

Pedestrian detour for the overcrossing is being finalized. Detour signs will be installed on the route. Detour map will be available at sfhighwayprojects.com.

Vehicle detours are part of the contract plans. Vehicle detour sings are installed and will be uncovered when a detour is active. Detour maps will be available at sfhighwayprojects.com.
