San Mateo County ― Caltrans is continuing work on the El Camino Real Roadway Renewal project with tree removal and potholing work. Some rescheduling is necessary due to the discovery of Anna's Hummingbird and Oak Titmouse nests in a few of the trees scheduled for removal. Crews will wait until the incubation and nesting period has finished before removing the impacted trees. The discovery of additional nests may result in rescheduling at short notice.
A full closure is scheduled between Carmelita and Grove from March 2 - 6, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition to tree removal work, potholing will take place next week, March 2 - 6, between Rosedale Ave and Millbrae Ave. and between Peninsula Ave. and Santa Inez Ave. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Two lanes of El Camino Real will be closed for this work. (Potholing is the process of identifying utilities under the roadway, such as gas lines, water mains, petroleum lines and fiber optic cables, to allows crews to visually verify the exact depth, material, and type of utilities are present to avoid damage before they begin paving work.) Potholing involves large equipment such as jackhammers and excavators, so please be aware of increased noise while this work is carried out.
Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain this vital thoroughfare.

About the Project
The $173M El Camino Real roadway rehabilitation project will maintain El Camino Real as a safe, accessible, and reliable transportation corridor. The project encompasses repaving the road and upgrading sidewalks for enhanced mobility. It also aims to reduce localized flooding and improve visibility. This vital section of SR-82, traversing Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, and Millbrae, is also home to the historic The Howard-Ralston Eucalyptus Tree Rows which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The grove will be reinvigorated with the planting of many new trees.
