UPDATE: Nightly Partial Lane Closures for emergency barrier repairs on Eastbound and Westbound I-80 Freeway in San Francisco Monday, September 16 starting at 10:00 PM

San Francisco — Caltrans is scheduling overnight closures of two lanes on Interstate 80 (I-80) beginning Monday, September 16 at 10:00 PM to allow crews to make emergency barrier repairs. One lane will remain open while the work is taking place. The emergency repairs are necessary to replace damaged concrete barrier and tubular railing on connectors due to vehicle collisions over the years. The repairs include removing and rebuilding sections of the barrier structures. During the closure window, motorists may experience significant traffic delays. Motorist should use an alternate route, listed below.

This month’s repairs are the first of many other needed repairs requiring lane closures on the Central freeway through October. The first repairs in October is scheduled for October 4, where a 55-hour weekend full closure will be required on US-101 Central Freeway to complete barrier repairs. SF motorist should expect delays. Caltrans will keep the public apprised of additional scheduled closures on its website and social platforms. Night Lane Closure Details:

  • Starting the week of September 16, two eastbound and two westbound lanes of I-80 will close from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, with crews focusing on one direction at a time for overnight work.
  • All lanes will re-open at 6 AM.
  • Motorists will have continuous use of one lane where work is underway.
  • Motorists may experience significant traffic delays.
     

Alternate Routes:

Motorists traveling from northbound US-101 to eastbound I-80, going to the Bay Bridge should take:

  • I-280 to King St.
  • Turn left onto 2nd St. and take the Bryant St. on ramp. Or continue and take the Harrison St. on ramp. 

Motorists traveling westbound I-80 from the Bay Bridge to southbound I-280:

  • Take the 5th St. and Harrison off ramp, make a left onto 6th St., and continue to reach southbound I-280 on ramp.

Motorists traveling westbound I-80 from the Bay Bridge to southbound US-101:

  • Take the 5th St. and Harrison off ramp and continue to Harrison to 9th St., to the southbound US-101 on ramp.

Traffic Control Measures:

Changeable messages and directional signs will be in place to assist motorists traveling in the area. During the closures, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be at the sites.
