I-80 Secret Town Culvert Rehabilitation

Project Facts

Project Description:

The project is located on Interstate 80 (I-80) in Placer County near Secret Town from the Secret Town Overcrossing (OC) to the Gold Run Rest Area.  The project proposes to rehabilitate the deteriorated and damaged portion of the existing roadway drainage systems (culverts, downdrains, etc.) near Magra, from Secret Town Overcrossing to the Gold Run Safety Roadside Rest Area (SRRA). There are 44 culverts that are scheduled for rehabilitation in this project.

Purpose and Need:

Rehabilitate deteriorated culverts and restore service life of drainage facilities in greatest need of repair to fifty years. Rehabilitation strategies proposed will improve flow characteristics, reduce risk of clogging, eliminate embankment erosion, and reduce maintenance costs.

The culverts along this section of roadway have exceeded their intended design life and are in need of rehabilitation or replacement. Corrosion has deteriorated the culvert walls, inverts, and inlet structures. Consequently, the flow of water infiltrates the corroded areas and causes scour and erosion to the surrounding soil. Eventually, the erosion may deteriorate the integrity of the roadway base and sub-base sections.
