Sacramento - Caltrans is notifying motorists of a new alignment for northbound traffic as part of the ongoing $239.5 million State Route 51 (Business 80/Capital City Freeway) American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project in Sacramento.
The final construction configuration will have K-rail along the right shoulder of the highway to provide a protected work area for crews rehabilitating the bridge overhang barrier and building the new bike and pedestrian path.
Work is scheduled from 10 p.m. Sunday, November 23 through 5 a.m. Monday, November 24 to put this new traffic configuration in place.
The project is replacing the bridge deck, installing sheet piles around piers for reinforcement, and adding a Class I bike path to connect to the existing American River bike path for increased mobility.

SCHEDULE AND LOCATION:
- 10 p.m. Sunday, November 23 to 5 a.m. Monday, November 24
- Northbound Capital City Freeway (SR 51) between the Elvas Boulevard underpass and Exposition Boulevard
- Southbound Capital City Freeway will remain the same
- The Exposition Boulevard off-ramp from northbound SR 51 will be reduced to one lane
Work is scheduled to begin as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials, and construction related issues.
Motorists traveling through the work zone should be aware of commercial work vehicles traveling in and out of the area. The work zone speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph and the California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement.
This project includes $236.8 million in funding from the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) and $2.7 million from the Active Transportation Program
(ATP). Visit BuildingCA.ca.gov to learn more about transformative infrastructure projects happening in communities throughout the state.
