Sacramento County — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is scheduled to perform its fourth extended weekend closure for the SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement (FixSac5) Project beginning Friday, July 10 at 9:00 p.m. until Monday, July 13 at 5:00 a.m.
Crews are scheduled to close the #3 (right-middle) and #4 (right) lanes on northbound and southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) from Florin Road to 35th Avenue.
Two lanes in each direction are scheduled to remain open while crews work around the clock. For the safety of crews and to avoid delays and traffic congestion, motorists are encouraged to use State Route 99 as alternate route.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be patrolling the project site ticketing motorists who are not adhering to the posted speed limit signs. The speed limit has been reduced to 55 MPH through the construction zone 24/7.
The closures and speed limit reductions are necessary for the safety of motorists and workers. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” – someone’s loved one is at work.
Crews are also scheduled to close the following ramps:
- On-ramps from Florin Road to northbound I-5
- Off-ramp from northbound I-5 to westbound Florin Road
- Off-ramp from southbound I-5 to 43rd Avenue
- On-ramp from Seamas Avenue to southbound I-5
A contractor is scheduled for excavating, paving and striping. The around the clock construction work will require heavy equipment and commercial trucking. Nearby residents expect commercial truck back-up beeping noises and loud jack hammering type noises during day and nighttime hours.
The extended lane and ramp closures are necessary to perform major traffic interfering work. This is the fourth of 16 extended-weekend and daytime closures. Motorists should also expect ramp and lane closures this week from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. The ongoing work is part of the SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement Project to repair 67 lane miles of roadway and construct 23 miles of new High Occupancy Vehicle (carpool) lanes. The $370 million project extends from about one mile south of Elk Grove Boulevard Overcrossing to the American River Bridge. Crews will also replace a pedestrian overcrossing, construct sound walls, install new fiber optic lines, new ramp meters, repair exiting electrical and drainage systems, and extend various entrance and exit ramps. Funding includes $48.3 million from SB 1. The contract was awarded May 31, 2019 and construction began in late July 2019. The project is expected to be completed by December 2022.
Work is scheduled to begin as listed but subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials, and construction related issues.
