Turnaround/Changeable Message Sign Project Underway on Interstate 5 and U.S. 97 in Siskiyou County

Caltrans District 2, in conjunction with Hat Creek Construction & Materials, Inc., have begun work on a turnaround construction and changeable message sign installation project on portions of Interstate 5 and U.S. 97 in Siskiyou County. The scope of work on the $3.8 million project includes:

  • U.S. 97: Construction of paved turnaround approximately 5 miles south of Macdoel and new chain-on area approximately 3 miles north of Weed. 
  • Interstate 5: Construction of paved turnarounds at various locations from just north of Edgewood Road to Copco Road; construction and installation of changeable message signs for southbound traffic north of Copco Road and north of the Weed Safety Roadside Rest Area; and installation of turnable sign and arrow boards at southbound Moonlit Oaks off ramp in South Yreka area. 

Construction began on Tuesday, August 17. On U.S. 97, motorists can plan for one-way traffic control at times with lane and shoulder closures, with 15-20 minute delays. On Interstate 5, motorists can plan for lane and shoulder closures with minimal delays depending on traffic volumes. 

Work is currently planned for Mondays-Saturdays during daytime hours. The project is currently anticipated to be complete by mid-November.
