Redding – Caltrans has announced it is scheduled to begin construction by late spring on the $10.2 million Moffett Creek Bridge replacement project that includes $7.7 million in funding from Senate Bill (SB) 1. Located six miles north of Fort Jones off State Route (SR) 3 in Siskiyou County, the project is expected to be completed by late November 2021.

The project will feature a complete bridge replacement, widening of the roadway shoulders to conform with the new bridge width, and include an upgrade to the bridge approach railing, bringing it into compliance with current safety standards. Additionally, permanent patching and an asphalt overlay along the detour route will upgrade the current driving surface to provide a smooth, stable, and safe route for motorists.

“The department is excited to begin another significant SB 1 project that will ultimately improve the travel experience for thousands of Californians who use this stretch of State Route 3,” said Caltrans Director 2 Director Dave Moore. “Thanks to SB 1, we are able to make investments in the district that fix our aging infrastructure, upgrade and maintain the state highway system and enhance safety for the traveling public.”

Motorists can expect intermittent periods of one-way traffic control along SR 3 through the end of October. All drivers are urged to slow down and drive carefully in and around construction areas and allot extra time for delays. A designated detour route will be located at Peach Orchard Road and will continue to Moffett Creek Road over the course of 120 working days, beginning in May 2021.

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually split between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1. The State’s transportation system is a high priority for California.  As the 2021 Construction Season begins, Caltrans, North Region Construction and District 2 will follow construction operations as scheduled while following proper COVID-19 protocols to keep our staff, contractors and the traveling public safe.
