Calexico, CA — Caltrans work to widen eastbound State Route 98 (SR-98/West Birch Street) between Ollie Avenue and State Route 111 (SR-111/Imperial Avenue) will begin tonight at 9:00 p.m. Concrete barriers will be set in place that will reduce eastbound and westbound traffic on SR-98 to one lane through Fall of 2023. Left and right turn lanes will be allowed into Ollie Avenue and SR-111. The traffic signal cycle will continue to allow a left turn.

The maintenance work schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents, or other maintenance considerations.

This is Stage 2 of the effort to widen SR-98 through SR-111 to address border-related traffic, improve pedestrian safety, and accommodate the Calexico West Port of Entry Expansion project.

Stage 3, westbound SR-98 (East Birch Street) between Rockwood Avenue and SR-111 (Imperial Avenue) construction will begin Spring of 2023.

Stage 4, eastbound SR-98 (East Birch Street) between SR-111 (Imperial Avenue) and Rockwood Avenue construction will begin Summer of 2023.

Special attention will be paid to litter removal on northbound SR-111 from SR-98 to Interstate 8 (I-8).

Stage 1 was completed, and opened new westbound lanes on SR-98/West Birch Street between SR-111/Imperial Avenue and Ollie Avenue in November 2022.

Caltrans looks forward to working with the community of Calexico to improve the transportation network and connections between various modes of travel, to enhance the experience of those who use the transportation system.

Motorists are reminded to be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment.

The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other construction-related reasons.
