Bridge Rehabilitation and Concrete Slab Repairs Have Begun

SAN DIEGO — Construction crews have begun the Interstate 8 (I-8) Bridge Rehabilitation Project between Jackson Drive in La Masa to First Street in El Cajon. The six-mile project will involve bridge rehabilitation and concrete slab repairs on both westbound and eastbound I-8 and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2023, weather permitting.

Sunday night only, November 20, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., all lanes of eastbound I-8 will close between Severin Drive and Marshall Avenue. The closure includes the on- and off-ramps at La Mesa Boulevard/Grossmont Center Drive, Severin Drive/Bancroft Drive, and El Cajon Boulevard, as well as the Main Street off-ramp. Motorists will be detoured to northbound State Route 125, then to eastbound State Route 52, and to southbound State Route 67.

Eastbound lanes will be narrowed from 12 feet to 10 ½ feet. Traffic will shift slightly to the right, and there will be no shoulder for ¼ mile. The freeway will stay in this configuration for four to five months; then, crews will perform the same operation on the westbound lanes.

Residents in the area may hear heavy equipment movement, concrete saw cutting, and jackhammering Sunday through Thursday nights between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. during this work.

Motorists are reminded to be Work Zone Alert if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment.

The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other construction-related reasons.
