SAN DIEGO — Construction crews have begun concrete slab replacement operations at the State Route 125 (SR-125) connectors with Interstate 8 (I-8) and State Route 94 (SR-94) as part of an SR-125 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, according to Caltrans.

Work is taking place Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Thursday, October 28, and includes concurrent paving operations on southbound SR-125 between State Route 52 and I-8.

Signs will be posted alerting motorists about lane reductions on the SR-125 travel way and connectors. At least one lane will remain open for traffic, and the work is scheduled at night during lower traffic volumes for motorist and worker safety.

Crews will fully close connectors at northbound SR-125 and westbound/eastbound SR-94 for 32 hours beginning Saturday, October 29 at 9 p.m. through Monday, October 31 at 5 a.m. The extended closure is needed to remove and replace concrete slab panels before the winter hiatus begins on November 1. The northbound SR-125/Campo Road on-ramp will also be closed. The following detours will be in place:

  • Detour for Eastbound SR-94 Connector to Northbound SR-125: Continue travel on eastbound SR-94 and exit at Campo Road/Spring Street. Turn north onto Spring Street to eastbound I-8, to SR-125.
  • Detour for Westbound SR-94 Connector to Northbound SR-125: Continue travel on westbound SR-94 to northbound Interstate 805 (I-805) to northbound Interstate 15 (I-15) to eastbound I-8, to SR-125.
  • Detour for Northbound SR-125 closure at SR-94: Continue travel on northbound SR-125 to westbound SR-94, to northbound I-805 to northbound I-15, to eastbound I-8 to SR-125.
  • Detour for Northbound SR-125/Campo Road On-ramp Closure: Continue north on Campo Road onto northbound Spring Street, to eastbound I-8 to SR-125.

Nearby residents can expect nighttime construction lights, noisy concrete removal and paving operations involving heavy equipment movement, and Cal/OSHA-required backup alarms.

Project operations will be suspended on November 1 during cooler weather and begin again on June 1, 2023.

The work schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents, or other project considerations.

The SR-125 Pavement Rehabilitation Project will restore ride quality and extend the existing pavement life on a nearly 10-mile section of SR-125 from just south of the SR-125/-SR-94 separation in Lemon Grove to just east of the Spring Street Undercrossing in La Mesa and then to Mission Gorge Road in Santee. The work includes replacing failed concrete slabs, distressed paving, and updating Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps. Construction began in October 2022, with completion expected in fall 2024. The project team will suspend operations from November 1, 2022, through May 31, 2023, when low temperatures interfere with concrete and paving curing. The estimated total project cost is $32 million, funded through the Federal Highway Trust Fund and State Highway Fund.
