SAN DIEGO — Caltrans crews will close the southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) connector to northbound and southbound State Route 163 (SR-163) Sunday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for emergency electrical work. The on-ramps from First Avenue and the Tenth Avenue off-ramp from southbound I-5, will also be closed. The Grape Street and Fifth Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-5 will remain open.

The detours for these closures are as follows:

  • Detour to northbound SR-163: continue on southbound I-5 and exit at Imperial Avenue and turn left, turn left onto 19th Street to northbound I-5 to northbound SR-163
  • Detour to southbound SR-163 and downtown: continue on southbound I-5 and exit at B street

The work is scheduled at night during low traffic volumes to minimize traffic impacts, increase worker safety and for the safety of the traveling public. The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents or other construction considerations.

Nearby residents and businesses can expect nighttime construction noise and lights, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) required vehicle back up alarms. Crews will work to minimize noise and impacts to all nearby communities.
