SR-78 Corridor Upgrades in Escondido

SR-78 Pavement Rehabilitation Project Icon.Introduction

This project will improve the ride quality and extend the service life of this section of State Route 78 (SR-78) and upgrade curb ramps, modify traffic signals, and the addition of a bike route between North Broadway and Flora Vista Street.

Extending the service life

This latest rehabilitation of SR-78 in the city of Escondido will remove the entire asphalt section and replace it with a large-stone asphalt base and a new rubberized asphalt overlay, which will significantly extend the pavement lifecycle.

Improving the highway

Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from the reconstruction of 83 curb ramps to be compliant with Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, modifying seven traffic signals with a fiber-optic vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) traffic signal upgrades, upgraded crosswalks and pedestrian signals, high visibility roadway striping and a Class II and III bike routes.

At the conclusion of the work later this fall, residents, and motorists will see and feel an improvement in ride quality and the extension of the roadway's service life.

This project is estimated to be completed in late 2021.

Funding

This $14.3 million project is funded by the voter approved Senate Bill 1 (SB-1) through the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) for a multimodal project to upgrade approximately five miles of SR-78.
