State Route 111 is expected to open sometime Friday night on October 11

Project Update

Greetings!

It has been a week since crews closed a portion of State Route 111 (SR-111) just south of Davis and Gillespie roads, about five miles north of Niland.

The work is on track to re-open the highway Friday night, October 11.

The Union Pacific Railroad is also working at the Niland Geyser location and may fully close local roads with minimal notice. For information, contact Lupe Valdez at (562) 566-4612 or by email to lcvaldez@up.com.

Caltrans will continue to maintain access to Davis and Gillespie roads with possible lane closures and one-way traffic control as needed.

The official detour around the closure remains in place:

  • Motorists north of the closure will be detoured along northbound SR-111 towards Mecca, to westbound SR-195/66th Avenue, to southbound SR-86 to eastbound SR-78, to northbound SR-111 toward Niland.
  • Motorists south of the closure will be detoured along southbound SR-111 towards Brawley, to westbound SR-78, to northbound SR-86 towards Mecca, to eastbound SR-195/66th Avenue to southbound SR-111 towards Niland.

The latest construction photos and drove footage of the mud pot can be found at this updated link: https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-11/current-projects/SR111-NilandGeyser
