Stockton – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and it’s Community Aesthetics Advisory Committee have announced the results from a recent survey designed to select the aesthetic theme for the Interstate 5 Stockton Channel Viaduct Project.

Caltrans and the Committee identified three different design options to choose from in the public survey, including themes representing the region such as Agriculture, Nature/Wildlife, and Marine/Delta, to help shape the look and feel of this significant project.

The survey which ran from July 8 through October 8, 2025, saw the Marine/Delta design option receive the most votes (51%), followed by Nature/Wildlife (30%) and Agriculture (19%) amongst over 200 public responses. Final survey results can be viewed at https://engage.dot.ca.gov/f1216#tab-53042.

In August 2024, the Stockton Channel Viaduct Project Community Aesthetics Advisory Committee was formed to provide input and recommendations to Caltrans on aesthetic elements for the project. Ten community members answered the call for volunteers to help form this committee. Caltrans’ goal was to solicit recommendations from members of the community at large to provide multiple perspectives to inform the aesthetic design of the project, while also identifying potential design elements that implement local identity.

Caltrans would like to thank the community for participating in and assisting Caltrans with creating a design that brings community identity and pride!

Project Background

The Stockton Channel Viaduct Project proposes to replace the northbound and southbound Stockton Channel Viaduct Bridges on Interstate 5 to ensure long-term serviceability, structural integrity and improve the permit load rating for commercial vehicles and the movement of goods.

The project is needed because of structural deficiencies and continued bridge repairs. The bridges show concrete and steel superstructure/foundation deficiencies, including a long-standing issue of concrete deck deterioration resulting in ongoing maintenance challenges.
