Construction Stage 9 Traffic Shift Scheduled For July 31-August 2, 2026
San Joaquin County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will soon be shifting traffic lanes on Interstate 5 (I-5) between Hammer Lane and Eight Mile Road in Stockton as construction progresses to Stage 9 of the I-5 Anchor Pavement and Rehabilitation Project.
The Stage 9 traffic shift will begin the weekend of July 31-August 2, 2026, and will see three traffic lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 remain open during daytime hours, with alternating lane and ramp closures overnight. With the majority of work completed, all mainline traffic lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 will be shifted to their final configuration. (See illustration.)
Construction Stage 9 is estimated to take 14 working days and will see work being performed on the right shoulders and median shoulders, guardrail installation and final placement of delineation (striping.) Additional paving, ramp and shoulder work will occur on I-5 between SR-12/Flag City and the San Joqauin/Sacramento County line, requiring daytime/nighttime single-lane closures.
I-5 Anchor Project - Completed Work So Far:
Caltrans and the contractor, Bay Cities Paving and Grading Inc., have already completed:
- Stage 1 - Widening of the northbound and southbound median shoulders from 4 feet to 10 feet.
- Stage 2 - Paving of the northbound I-5 right-hand shoulders.
- Stage 3 – Replacement of the southbound I-5 damaged existing #3 lane (concrete) and right-hand HMA shoulder with new Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton.
- Stage 4 – Replacement of the southbound I-5 damaged existing #2 (middle) lane with new Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton.
- Stage 5 - Replacement of the southbound I-5 damaged existing #1 lane (concrete) with new Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton. Paving and striping of the on and off-ramps from SR-12/Flag City to Walnut Grove Road.
- Stage 6 – Replacement of the northbound I-5 damaged existing #3 (right) lane and right-hand shoulder.
- Stage 7 – Replacement of the northbound I-5 damaged existing #2 (middle) lane
- Stage 8 – Replacement of the northbound I-5 damaged existing #1 (left) lane
The above listed traffic shifts and lane/ramps closures are required as part of the I-5 Anchor Pavement Project that will improve 34 miles of existing pavement and shoulders from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the San Joaquin/ Sacramento County line. The project will also overlay on- and off-ramps with asphalt concrete at Eight Mile Road, SR-12, Turner Road, Peltier Road, and Thornton Road/Walnut Grove Road.
