55-Hour Full Closures On Southbound I-5 At Hammer Lane Off-Ramp And Eight Mile Road On-Ramp Now Scheduled For March 28-31, 2025

San Joaquin County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has postponed 55-hour full ramp closures scheduled for this weekend at Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane on southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) due to cold/inclement weather in the forecast.

i5 South 55hr Closure Map

Closures of the Eight Mile Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 and the Hammer Lane off-ramp from southbound I-5 are now scheduled to occur beginning at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2025.

Detour Information During 55-Hour Closures:

  • Southbound I-5 Eight Mile Road on-ramp – motorists are advised to take Eight Mile Road to northbound I-5 to SR-12/Flag City to southbound I-5 during this closure.
  • Southbound I-5 Hammer Lane off-ramp – motorists are advised to exit at Benjamin Holt Drive for access to local streets during this closure.

Closures of these ramps are required for excavation and removal of the existing roadway surface, followed by constuction of new roadway surface and lane delineation (striping.)

Upon completion of these 55-hour ramp closures on March 31, 2025, a new traffic shift configuration will be implemented along the southbound I-5 Eight Mile Road/Hammer Lane corridor on April 10, 2025. Prior to the Eight Mile Road off-ramp, three lanes of southbound traffic will be split using the newly constructed #3 (right) lane, while the #2 (middle) lane will shift to the existing #1 (middle) lane behind k-rail (tunnel) and the #1 (left) crossed-over (tunnel) lane will remain in place. All three lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 will be open during daytime hours, with alternating lane closures occuring overnight. This traffic lane configuaration is expected to be in place until July 21, 2025.

Stage 4 lane closure i5 South

Work being performed during Stage 4 will include roadway excavation of the existing #2 (middle) lane of southbound I-5 and placement of aggregate subbase and hot mix asphalt (HMA), followed by construction of Continously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) on top of the HMA.

I-5 Anchor Project - Completed Work So Far:

  • Caltrans and the contractor, Bay Cities Paving and Grading Inc., have already completed Stage 1 that included widening of the northbound and southbound median shoulders from 4 feet to 10 feet.
  • Stage 2 - Paving of the northbound I-5 right-hand shoulders.
  • Stage 3 – Scheduled for completion on April 10, 2025, this stage includes the removal of damaged concrete pavement and installation of new pavement on the #3 (right) lane and right-hand shoulder of southbound I-5 between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton.

The above listed traffic shifts and lane/ramps closures are required as part of the I-5 Anchor Pavement Project that will improve 34 miles of existing pavement and shoulders from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the San Joaquin/ Sacramento County line. The project will also overlay on- and off-ramps with asphalt concrete at Eight Mile Road, SR-12, Turner Road, Peltier Road, and Thornton Road/Walnut Grove Road.
