San Joaquin County
Construction Stage 3 To Include 55-Hour Full Closure of Southbound I-5 Ramps at Hammer Lane and Eight Mile Road
San Joaquin County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will soon be shifting all traffic lanes on Interstate 5 (I-5) between Hammer Lane and Eight Mile Road in Stockton as construction progresses on the I-5 Anchor Pavement and Rehabilitation Project.

Interstate 5
The Stage 3 traffic shift will begin the week of October 6, 2024, and will see three traffic lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 remain open during daytime hours, with alternating lane closures overnight. The southbound #1 (left) lane will be shifted behind k-rail and crossed-over to the newly-paved northbound I-5 median lane, with the #2 (middle) and #3 (right) lanes open on the southbound mainline.
Northbound motorists will travel in the #2 (left), #3 (middle), and the newly-paved right shoulder lane. (See illustration above). This Stage 3 traffic shift is expected to be in place through mid-December 2024.
Construction Stage 3 will see work being performed on the #3 (right) lane and right-hand shoulder of southbound I-5 between Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane in Stockton.
A 55-hour weekend full closure of the Eight Mile Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 and the Hammer Lane off-ramp from southbound I-5 will also be required during Stage 3. Dates and times are not yet finalized but will be provided in future traffic advisories.
Caltrans and the contractor, Bay Cities Paving and Grading Inc., have already completed Stage 1, that included the widening of the northbound and southbound median shoulders from 4 feet to 10 feet, and Stage 2 that included paving work in the northbound right-hand shoulders.
The above listed traffic shift, overnight alternating lane closures and ramp closures on I-5 between Hammer Lane and the San Joaquin/Sacramento County line are required as part of the I-5 Anchor Pavement Project that will improve 34 miles of existing pavement and shoulders from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the San Joaquin/ Sacramento County line. The project will also overlay on- and off-ramps with asphalt concrete at Eight Mile Road, State Route 12, Turner Road, Peltier Road, and Thornton Road/Walnut Grove Road.
