Calaveras County Reactive Safety Rumble Strip Project
Project Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to install centerline rumble strips on State Route (SR) 4 from post mile (PM) R21.10 to R23.29 in Calaveras County. The project would close an existing two-mile gap in centerline rumble strips starting from the State Route 4 and State Route 49 intersection to 0.5 miles east of Angels Creek Bridge. The proposed improvements include removal and replacement of the existing centerline stripes and pavement markers, cold planning 0.25 feet of the existing asphalt concrete (AC) pavement, placing 0.25 feet hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay, and installing of centerline rumble strips.
Project Benefits
Purpose
The purpose of the project is to reduce potential fatalities and serious injuries from cross over collisions and support Caltrans Director's Policy 36 and its goal of achieving zero deaths and serious injuries on California roadways by 2050.
Need
The project is needed to address the 2021 Cross Over Crash Monitoring Program Report which identified this segment of State Route 4 as having a history of fatal and serious-injury collisions, and a traffic safety investigation identified a gap in centerline rumble strips within the project limits.
