State Route 120 Murphy Road Intersection Improvement Project

Project Description

This Safety Improvement project, the State Route 120 Intersection Control Improvement Project (project), is located in San Joaquin County on State Route (SR) 120 near Manteca at the intersection of Murphy Road. The intersection of SR 120 and Murphy Road is four-legged, with stop control access from Murphy Road and free-flow traffic on SR 120. The project proposes to reduce the number and severity of broadside collisions at this location by constructing intersection control improvements.

Three design options were evaluated in the Project Initiation Document (PID) development process: a traffic signal, a roundabout, and All-Way-Stop-Control. The design option that will be evaluated as the build alternative in the Project Approval and Environmental Document phase (PA&ED) of the project is the Roundabout. This decision was made in the PID phase using data gained from the Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) process. Furthermore, a No- Build Alternative will be carried through PA&ED. Additional right-of-way and utility relocation will be necessary. The project has been assigned a Project Development Category of 4B, indicating minimal economic, social, or environmental significance. It is included in the 2022 State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) under the Safety Improvements Program (201.010) for delivery in Fiscal Year (FY) 2025/26.

Purpose

The purpose of the project is to reduce the number and severity of broadside collisions at SR 120 and Murphy Road intersection.

Need

A higher than average pattern of broadside collisions has been identified at the intersection because of motorists failure to yield.
