Tuolomne County Interchange Enhancement & Gateway Project

Project Description

The proposed project will implement aesthetic treatments at the over-crossings and entrances to Sonora. These gateway elements are intended to express local sense of place and identity. The aesthetic treatments are intended to contribute to local and regional character allowing residents and visitors alike to enjoy the beautify of the corridor, improve the county's public image and have a positive influence on Tuolumne County’s tourist-based economy and welcome our visitors. An additional site in City of Sonora is proposed to add some beautification features (e.g. artistic fencing) to a vacant Caltrans Maintenance Yard at Mono Way/Greenley Rd. Additionally, it is proposed to add a gateway monument sign within the triangular shape state property that will remain after the SR 49/Parrots Ferry road intersection is realigned and currently under construction.

Project Benefits

Purpose

The current highway over-passes on Route 108 in Tuolumne County are stark, modern structures that do not fit the landscape of the region. They evoke an urban aesthetic that is out of place in this rural community. This project will dramatically enhance the region when completed. The Clean California program will enable the Route 108 Corridor Beautification project to express local sense of place and identity, and while also striving to achieve other community benefits including highlighting the area’s history and culture.

Clean California provides an opportunity to install signage across Ebbetts Pass that can invite visitors and community members to experience and appreciate the scenic treasure. These gateway elements are intended to express local sense of place and identity, while striving to achieve other community benefits to help restore pride in an area devastated by recent wildfires (Markleeville), climate change (Bear Valley- dependent on winter recreation) and economic decline (Arnold) due to the pandemic and other factors.

Need

The Clean California program will enable the Route 108 Corridor Beautification project to express local sense of place and identity, and while also striving to achieve other community benefits including highlighting the area’s history and culture.
