Calaveras State Route 4 Pavement Rehabilitation Project

Project Description

This project proposes to restore, rehabilitate, and replace pavement and roadway facilities on State Route (SR) 49 in Calaveras County from the Tuolumne County line at post mile R0.0 to the Amador County line at post mile 30.87. The project passes through the communities of Angels Camp, San Andreas, and Mokelumne Hill and will improve pavement service life and ride quality while addressing non-standard roadway facilities.

The scope includes cold planing and overlay, repairing failed pavement and dig-outs, repaving gores, pullouts and a vista point, restriping, upgrading guardrail systems, replacing signs and dikes, rehabilitating drainage systems, replacing loop detectors, and constructing a concrete bridge structure beneath the roadway near PM R21.0 to stabilize and reinforce weak underlying roadway materials.

Project Benefits

Purpose and Need

The purpose of the project is to restore and replace pavement and roadway facilities to current operational standards to improve serviceability, maintenance costs, and ride quality within the project limits. The project is needed because pavement structural distress identified in the 2021 Automated Pavement Condition Survey is causing multiple roadway facilities to deteriorate and perform below capacity, resulting in lower ride quality and increased maintenance service and costs.
