State Route 49 Corridor

Project Description

Washington-Stockton Corridor-Downtown Transit & Accessibility Improvement Project. In the city of Sonora - construct pedestrian, bicycle, ADA, landscape and transit improvements, along with associated amenities (inclusive of bulb-outs, lighting, gateway signage, bike racks, security cameras) on Washington and Stockton roads to Sonora Creek.

Project Benefits

Purpose

Description of work within Caltrans RW includes adding bulb outs, widening existing sidewalks, providing bus stops along eastbound and westbound Stockton Street (SR-49), enhanced pedestrian crossings, ADA-compliant curb ramps, drainage system modifications, hardscaping, signing and striping, and signal modifications. Work also includes the installation of a pedestrian refuge island at Green Street.

Need

The intersection of Stockton Street (SR-49) and Green Street does not have marked crosswalks or ADA-compliant curb ramps. The intersection of Stockton Street (SR-49) and Washington Street (SR-49) is signal controlled with marked crosswalks, but no ADA-compliant curb ramps. The existing segment of Stockton Street (SR-49) within the project area has two westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes that become dedicated left-tum and right-tum lanes. There is existing on-street parking on both north and south sides of the street with several driveways to commercial properties.
