Project Benefits

Purpose and Need

The purpose of this project is to install a full trash capture device at the inlet end of existing culverts. The twin 60-inch diameter culverts are located on the southeast quadrant of State Route 99 (PM 14.9) and Tuolumne River, in the City of Modesto. The implementation of a Trash TMDL will help Department in achieving its goal of 100 percent compliance pertaining to the Trash Amendments. It is further assumed that the project footprint will extend 100 feet south of the culvert inlets, this will include any ground disturbance due to Construction Staging and other pertinent work.

At the project location, which is identified as a Significant Trash Generating Area, the stormwater, along with any trash, flows via a lined channel into existing twin culverts, which then discharge the water into the Tuolumne River. Constructing a Trash TMDL device is necessary for capturing trash, generating Compliance Units (CUs) and helping Department achieve its overall numeric goal of zero trash discharge to the Tuolumne River.
