Navarro Ridge Safety

A sunny day along Route 1 on the Mendocino Coast. A hill slopes down to a narrow roadway. Heavy equipment is positioned in multiple positions while vehicles traverse the highway.

Located in Mendocino County near Albion from 1.5 miles north of the junction of Route 128 to 0.1 mile south of Navarro Ridge Road.

The Project

This shoulder widening project proposes to widen existing shoulders in both directions to 4 ft., install edge-line rumble strip, perpetuate the existing centerline rumble strip, and install metal beam guardrail. Work will include replacement of four culverts, nine drainage inlets and the extension of three culverts. The project was initiated by District 1 Traffic Safety Office in response to a high incidence of run-off-road collisions.

Project Benefit

This project will improve safety for the community, this segment of highway has a higher collision rate than the Statewide Average for similar facilities. Also, the shoulder widening would address the run-off-road collisions by providing recovery area when a vehicle is leaving the traveled way.
