EUREKA — Today with staff and partners, Caltrans District 1 solemnly observed its annual Workers' Memorial, an event dedicated to honoring the memory of those who have tragically lost their lives while serving the community. This year's in-person event marked a return to tradition after several years of virtual iterations.

Caltrans District 1, encompassing Humboldt, Del Norte, Lake, and Mendocino counties, includes a vast network of highways vital to the region's connectivity. Sadly, this infrastructure comes with a somber reality: since 1921, 193 Caltrans employees have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, with 17 of these fatalities occurring within District 1 alone.

"Today, we paid tribute to these remarkable individuals and their dedication," Caltrans District 1 Director Matt Brady said. "Their service is within the fabric of our communities, and their sacrifices will never be forgotten."

Safety remains paramount for Caltrans, its workforce, and the traveling public. While the agency's ultimate goal is zero fatalities on highways, the unfortunate toll of lives lost underscores the critical need for ongoing vigilance and commitment to safety initiatives.

The event featured speakers such as California Highway Patrol's Area Commander Larry Depee and Humboldt County Fourth District Supervisor Natalie Arroyo who emphasized a shared commitment to safer highways and work zones. Attendees also honored District 1’s fallen workers with a reading of their names, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of public service.

As we reflect on the lives lost, we must also redouble our efforts to ensure the safety of all who traverse our highway. Enhanced safety measures and public awareness are crucial in our ongoing mission to prevent further tragedies.

Caltrans District 1 urges travelers to exercise caution in work zones. Please slow down in work zones, remain vigilant, and allow extra travel time to ensure the safety of all road users.
