Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team

The objective of the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) Program is to provide Caltrans & CHP with the means to conduct in-depth investigations and analyses of major traffic collisions throughout the state. MAIT consist of investigators with specialized skill and training in accident reconstruction, traffic engineering, and automotive engineering. The purpose of the teams is to supplement the Department's normal accident investigation efforts. Investigations include the reconstruction of an incident and a study of the factors that may have contributed to the incident.

The factors include environmental, human and mechanical and are associated with the three phases of a collision which are pre-crash, at-crash and post-crash. The ultimate objective of the program is the utilization of these identified causation factors to prevent collisions of a similar nature from recurring.

Team Composition

A minimum team compliment is composed of a Team Leader - a CHP Sergeant, two CHP officers - Human factors specialist and a dynamics specialist, a CHP Motor Carrier Specialist - Mechanical specialist and a Caltrans Senior Transportation Engineer - Roadway environment specialist.
