LOS ANGELES — Safety is a high priority for Caltrans and licensed engineers inspect more than 26,000 bridges (approximately 13,000 state highway and about 13,000 local) statewide to ensure their safety and reliability.

The majority of California’s bridge inspections are conducted every two years, and some bridges are inspected more frequently when necessary. The conditions are documented and monitored, and repairs are recommended as necessary to ensure safety and reliability.

In this Caltrans News Flash, we join two structural engineers to explain the process involved in the routine inspections of two different bridges in the cities of Thousand Oaks and Camarillo in Ventura County.
