RIVERSIDE — The Cranston Fire, near the communities of Idyllwild and Mountain Center on State Routes 74 and 243, burned more than 13,000 acres and caused evacuations for 7,000 residents. In this Caltrans News Flash, we are alerting motorists of the possible mudslides and debris flows during the upcoming rainy season.
One debris flow has already occurred since the fire was contained on August 10, 2018, and future mudslides are possible over the next five years as the mountain landscape recovers.
Caltrans crews worked over one weekend to remove 325 trees so repairs to the fire damaged roadway could begin. The first phase of repairs was completed in mid-August and next phase will make long term repairs to culverts, debris flow basins and slopes in preparation for monsoons and winter storms.
