SAN MATEO COUNTY - Caltrans work continues on pavement repairs to nine bridges and overpasses on State Route 1, U.S. Highway 101, and Interstate 280 in San Mateo County, due to the funds from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

"This project illustrates the prudent use of taxpayer funds. For a relatively small investment, the bridge and overpass roads will be able to handle the high demands of San Mateo County traffic for years to come."

Laurie Berman, Director, Caltrans

More than 519,000 drivers per day use these routes to reach their destination within San Mateo County and beyond. Both residents and businesses of Silicon Valley, one of the engines of the California economy, depend on these routes to get them to and from their jobs and to transport the goods our economy needs.

"Without this SB 1 funded project, the pavement would continue to deteriorate, which would result in costly repairs in the future. New durable sealant coatings will provide a smooth and durable surface for cars and trucks alike."

Jim Davis, Acting Director, Caltrans District 4

The sealant used on this preventative maintenance project has been shown to significantly extend the service lives of bridge decks.

This $2.1 million pavement preservation project has been awarded to American Civil Contractors. Work began in mid-June, and will take place at night, from Saturday through Thursday. At least one lane in each direction will be open for traffic throughout the duration of the project. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and Be Work Zone Alert.

Work schedule is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials, and/or construction-related issues. More information and updates on projects can be found on Caltrans District 4's website or on Twitter via @CaltransDist4.

SB 1 provides an ongoing funding increase of approximately $1.8 billion annually for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the state highway system. SB 1 funds will enable Caltrans to fix more than 17,000 lane miles of pavement, 500 bridges and 55,000 culverts by 2027.

Caltrans is committed to conducting its business in a fully transparent manner and detailing its progress to the public. For complete details on SB 1, visit http://www.rebuildingca.ca.gov/.
