MONITORING REQUIREMENTS NOT MET FOR CALTRANS DIVISION CREEK SAFETY ROADSIDE REST AREA
Caltrans did not monitor the rest area’s water system as required for drinking water standards and was not in compliance with regulations for the months of May 2020 and April 2026. This monitoring failure was not an emergency, and water has since been tested and determined to be safe to drink. As our customers, you have a right to know what you should do, what happened, and what Caltrans did to correct this situation.
The table below lists the contaminant(s) Caltrans did not properly test for during the last year, how many samples are required to take and how often, how many samples were taken, when samples should have been taken, and the date on which follow-up samples were taken.

What happened? What is being done?
Caltrans is required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not drinking water meets health standards.
During May 2020 and April 2026, Caltrans did not sample Well 01 for total coliform bacteria within 24 hours of notification from the water quality testing lab and, therefore, could not be sure of the quality of drinking water during that time.
Caltrans tested Well 01 within 2 weeks of the lab’s notification in May 2020 and within 1 week of the lab’s notification in April 2026. Additional follow-up testing was conducted in May 2026, including at Well 01. Results showed that this water is currently safe to drink.
Caltrans staff have recently reviewed water quality monitoring schedules to avoid violations in the future.
