I-15 Battery Fire Near Baker

SAN BERNARDINO, CA– The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans District 8) is alerting traveling motorist that the northbound Interstate 15 (I-15) is currently closed at Baker due to a semi truck carrying lithium batteries catching fire.

At this time, San Bernardino County Fire has taken over as fire authority and they are working on fire suppression. Please follow them on on social media for the fastest updates.

Update 7/27/24 at 11:24 p.m.: Fire crews continue to work on suppression. Crews did try to move the truck and batteries to the side of the road, but the fire reignited. Currently, the I-40 is experiencing serve heavy traffic due to the closure on the NB I-15 and the best available detours are I-10 and US 395. The State and partner agencies are working together on removal of the semi truck on I-15 and providing relief to surrounding communities on both the I-15 and I-40. The State has assisted and will continue to provide water, gasoline and services to stranded vehicles on the I-15 and I-40.

Detour routes available are Interstate 10, Interstate 40 and US 395. Motorist should prepare for heavy traffic by checking travel conditions before they go at http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/. Ensure that your vehicle is in good running condition, including checking tires and fluids. Also make sure you have a charged cell phone, water, snacks, medications, and a first aid kit. Be alert and have patience for other motorists and expect traffic delays. Plan ahead and check for detours in the event there are unexpected road closures or excessive delays due to emergency situations.
