Blackwell’s Corner Capital Preventative Maintenance
Project Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to cold plane 0.25 inch of existing asphalt concrete pavement, replace that with Hot Mix Asphalt Type A after sealing cracks and repairing failed localized areas, overlay the entire roadway with 0.10 foot of Rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt-G Bonded Wearing Course, and construct shoulder backing within the project limits (post miles 40.4 to 59.0) on State Route 33 in Kern County. The project would also upgrade Transportation Management Strategy elements and culverts within the project limits.
Project Benefits
Purpose
The purpose of the project is to preserve, repair, and extend the life of the existing pavement and improve the ride quality of the roadway through the project limits.
Need
The existing pavement has been subjected to considerable distress and cracking due to heavy truck traffic and needs to be restored to a state of good repair to extend its service life. The project work would improve safety for the traveling public by minimizing frequent maintenance lane closures and reducing exposure to maintenance personnel in high speed traffic. The project would replace roadside signs that are in poor condition and restore existing drainage systems throughout the project limits.
