Hwy 101 Bridge Railing Replacement Project

Old tubular and banister railings to be replaced.
Old tubular and banister railing will be replaced
In May 2025, Caltrans began a $10 million project to replace railings on four Highway 101 overcrossings in Sonoma County: Mendocino Avenue, Shiloh Road, Fulton Road, and Limerick Lane.

Ghilotti Construction Company is the contractor on the project, which is estimated to take a year to complete.

Caltrans will replace the bridge railings that line these overcrossings because they are decades old, show wear and tear from the weather, and fall short of current safety standards.

Westbound Closure on Mendocino Avenue

Concrete Barrier with Lattice on Top

For safety reasons and to provide room to work, westbound Mendocino Avenue will  be closed for the month of May 2025. .  Traffic will detour south and cross Highway 101 at Bicentennial Way.

Eastbound traffic will remain open.

Old and New Railings and Barriers

The current railing on the south side of Mendocino Avenue is a banister-style railing, while the tubular barrier runs along the north side.  Caltrans will replace both railings with a concrete barrier that will be safer and easier for work crews to maintain.

Caltrans will affix a banister-style railing to the top of the concrete barriers as an architectural element.  (See example on Baker Avenue Overcrossing.)

Fulton Road Overcrossing

Caltrans closed southbound Fulton Road at the Hwy 101 overcrossing on May 6, 2025, to provide room for work crews to replace the bridge railings on the overpass.  Local traffic can go as far as the overpass before being turned around.  However, through traffic will turn Airport Boulevard and take the southbound Highway 101 on-ramp.

The closure on Fulton Road will last about two months.  First, southbound traffic will be detoured for a month.  Then as Caltrans works on the opposite bridge railing, northbound Fulton will be closed for approximately one month.
