SR-84 – U.S.101 Interchange Reimagined
Caltrans and the City of Redwood City, in cooperation with the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (SMCTA) and the City/County Association of Governments (C/CAG) of San Mateo County, are leading the effort to reconstruct the U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 84/Woodside Road Interchange and Port Access Project.
Constructed in 1959, the project area has been recognized as a significant regional and state problem for decades. Since 1988, Caltrans has listed it as a priority and SMCTA has designated it as a Key Congested Area.
Project Overview
The current SR-84 - U.S. 101 Interchange configuration results in congestion, traffic merging issues, and traffic backup onto the U.S. 101 mainline. This area saw 195 collisions between 2018 and 2022. Improvements to ramps, travel lanes, and intersections work together to enhance safety and operational effectiveness, leading to fewer collisions and serious injuries. Additionally, the project takes a "Complete Streets" approach by constructing over 4.2 miles of new bike and pedestrian facilities where none currently exist.
The multimodal, operational, and safety improvements include the following:
- Eliminating the five-legged intersection at Woodside Road and Broadway, replacing and reconfiguring existing U.S. 101 on- and off-ramps with multi-lane ramps.
- Creating safer, more accessible, and more efficient pathways for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
- Constructing fly-over ramps on Veterans Boulevard, reducing traffic congestion on SR-84, and enhancing capacity for trucks transporting goods to the Port of Redwood City.
- Constructing new sidewalks, protected multi-use paths, on-street bikeways, and safer crossings.
