April 11, 2025
Project Description:
In Los Gatos on Route 17, at Santa Cruz Avenue Undercrossing and Main Street Overcrossing, bridge rails are to be upgraded to meet current crash and safety standards.
Purpose & Need:
The purpose of this project is to upgrade the bridge rails to meet current crash and safety standards to ensure the protection of the traveling public and enhance the reliability of the bridge rails. The purpose of this project is also to improve the Asset Management rating of the Bridge Barrier Railing for both structures a GOOD rating in the Asset Management Survey.
The need of this project is based on Structure Maintenance and Investigations (SMI) current determination that the Bridge Barrier Railing for both these structures are rated POOR in the Asset Management Survey. These structures along the rails are subject to deterioration. There is a need to upgrade the bridge rails to meet current standards and to comply with the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) criteria for replacements.
Project Scope:
At Santa Cruz Undercrossing, the existing bridge rail will be replaced with concrete barrier Type 85. Additional strengthening of the bridge deck beneath the barrier will be required.
On Main Street Overcrossing, the sidewalk, concrete barrier, and chain link railing will be replaced. The new barrier will consist of Type 732SW (Mod) and a new Type 6 chain link railing. Additional strengthening of the bridge deck beneath the barrier will be required.
