Appian Way Overcrossing Emergency Replacement Project

City of Pinole, Contra Costa County

Why is this work needed?

In July 2025, Caltrans' Structures Maintenance and Investigations team identified corrosion on the steel columns supporting the Appian Way Overcrossing abutment during a routine bridge inspection. To protect the traveling public, Caltrans temporarily closed the bridge and installed temporary support while engineers developed a permanent solution.

Since then, Caltrans has continued to maintain temporary support while continuing to develop a long-term solution. Caltrans determined that the best path forward is to replace the northern portion of the southbound Appian Way Overcrossing with a wider, more robust structure. To complete this work safely, extended traffic changes and bridge closures are required.

Caltrans has scheduled a long-term full closure of the southbound Appian Way Overcrossing through spring 2027, weather permitting.

Long-Term Southbound Bridge Closure

A long-term full closure of the southbound Appian Way Overcrossing is scheduled to begin Monday, November 16, 2026, at 4 a.m., weather permitting. During construction, the northbound bridge will operate with one lane in each direction to maintain access across the overcrossing.

  • Motorists should expect traffic delays, temporary traffic control, and periodic lane restrictions in the area.

55-Hour Full Weekend Closure

Prior to the long-term closure, Caltrans will implement a full weekend closure of both the northbound and southbound Appian Way Overcrossing beginning 9 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2026, through approximately 4 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2026.

  • All NB and SB Appian Way traffic will be diverted on to I-80
