State Route 1 Slide Repair in Bodega Bay

Caltrans to Install Retaining Wall of Hwy 1 in Central Bodega Bay to Bolster Sinking Road

Caltrans will begin a project in late April 2026 to repair sinking pavement on State Route 1 in Bodega Bay between Kent and Taylor streets. Terracon will serve as the contractor on the $1.6 million project to build a retaining wall to stabilize the sinking shoulder.  Caltrans will work within the existing right of way, which means that, to have enough room to complete the construction, Caltrans will need to implement one-way traffic control for approximately three months, the estimated time to complete the project.
For those familiar with Bodega Bay, a point of reference is easy: the slide begins a foot or two south of Diekmann's Market and Deli's parking lot. Residents may note that a retaining wall has just been built at that location.  However, that wall was built by a private party and is NOT the Caltrans retaining wall. The private retaining wall does not obviate the need for the Caltrans retaining wall.

The new retaining wall will be built by drilling into the earth, as deep as thirty feet in a few locations, then filling the holes with steels cages over which concrete will be poured. The piles formed by the concrete and steel will be touching one another, forming a retaining wall.
