Low Emission Generator Keeps the Lights On at SR-1 Tom Lantos Tunnel:

This story is a key example of our Caltrans Bay Area team taking an innovative approach with our mission in mind at resolving a challenge, which many districts across the state are facing.

PSPS Events

In January 2021, Caltrans Bay Area, CA OES, CHP, Cal-Fire and local emergency agencies participated in a mock-up emergency drill, which gave Caltrans Bay Area the opportunity to test out the newly installed Tier 4, low emission generator system, which can generate 2.0 MW (million watts), capable of powering a small town.

The custom built Peterson Caterpillar generator at the Tom Lantos Tunnels will be able to produce enough energy to operate both tunnels, which will  provide a safe and reliable service to motorists in times of emergencies
