Answers Explained

  1. The Richardson Bay Bridge looks more like an elevated freeway than a traditional bridge. (An elevated freeway is, in fact, a bridge, but we are using the traditional definition.) It travels over the western edge of Richardson Bay between Sausalito and Mill Valley.

  2. The Antioch Bridge spans the San Joaquin River.

  3. The Al Zampa Bridge is one of two parallel bridges spanning the Carquinez Strait between Vallejo and Crockett.  Collectively, they're known as the Carquinez Bridge. The western bridge, which opened November 11, 2003, is named the Alfred Zampa Bridge. Zampa was an ironworker who worked on several of the large Bay Area bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge.

  4. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was named the “Sunny Jim” Rolf Bridge after an early 20th century mayor. The west span was recently named after Willie Brown. On the second floor of the Salesforce Terminal resides a plaque honoring Emperor Norton, who envisioned a bridge to Yerba Buena Island (called Goat Island, at the time), then connecting to the East Bay shore in Oakland.

  5. The Doran Bridge is a beautiful bridge on I-280 in Hillsdale. The bridge is best viewed from the canyon below. Heading north over the bridge, the “Flintstone House” comes into view. Owned by the Florence Fang, whose family once owned the San Francisco Examiner, the house is made of foam sprayed over a monolithic dome, which resembles Fred and Wilma’s house in the town of Bedrock.

  6. Sammy’s Creek is a small, slow-moving waterway located in Michiana, Indiana. Eventually, the creek makes its way into Lake Michigan.  (Sammy's Creek photo on the right)

  7. The bridge over Sonoma Creek in southern Sonoma County takes its name from Richard “Fresh Air” Janson, who once lived in the area and was known for carving decoy ducks.

  8. The Russian River Bridge in Geyserville nearly washed out in the El Nino storms of 2006 and was replaced during an emergency project that year.
