Lane closures extended to mid-December, are in effect Sundays through Thursdays, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

San Francisco - The project to install a temporary bridge access platform, known as the Safe Span, on the upper portion of the lower deck of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB) has been extended through mid-December. As a result, overnight eastbound I-80 lane closures will also continue through that period.
Four eastbound lanes will be closed, with one lane remaining open to traffic. Closures are scheduled Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and will continue most nights through mid-December. The closure area extends from the San Francisco Anchorage/Rincon Hill to the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel. All lanes will reopen each morning upon completion of work.
On nights with major San Francisco events or sporting events, crews will delay lane reductions by one hour to help reduce traffic impacts for motorists traveling to the East Bay.
The Safe Spans installation is essential to ensuring the safety of Caltrans crews while they paint sections of the bridge. The Safe Span system provides a secure, full-width platform that allows workers to safely access and apply paint to the lower deck. This effort is part of the broader Structural Steel Painting & Spall Repairs Project, launched by Caltrans in April 2026. The project is designed to enhance the durability and long-term safety of the bridge and is expected to be completed over five years, by 2031.
