UPDATE: Middle Mile Broadband Project Continues Installation along I-580, Including Westbound I-580 on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in Contra Costa County

Contra Costa County — Caltrans has updated its schedule for continued fiber-optic cable installation and other construction activities for the Middle Mile Broadband Project along Interstate 580, including work across the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge; due to field issues. Caltrans will continue to reduce the availability of the breakdown shoulder lane on the bridge. However, there will be no disruption to the current bike shuttle and bridge bike/ped path hours of operations.

Crews will continue to conduct a series of operations associated with the placement of almost 50,000 linear feet of fiber optic cable, through Thursday, November 19, 2026, including overnight lane closures.

Construction work in the breakdown shoulder lane will take place behind the moveable barrier/bike path, for worker safety and to minimize traffic disruptions.

Construction Schedule for WB Interstate 580 Richmond San Rafael Bridge

  • Monday, Sept. 14 – Thursday, November 12, 2026 (Monday-Thursday)
    • #3 lane will remain closed during construction (no breakdown lane/no bike access). Reopens Thursdays at 2 p.m.
  • Monday, November 16 – Thursday, November 19, 2026
    • Overnight lane #2 closures will be required from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on11/16, 11/17 and 11/18.

Notes:

  • During construction, there will be no impacts to the current bikeshuttle or bridge bike/ped path hours. See www.mtc.ca.gov/rsrpath for more information.
  • All work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Traffic ImpactsMotorists should expect intermittent lane closures associated with proofing andfinal cable placement operations during nighttime. Other construction activitieswill take place behind the existing barrier and are not expected to require trafficlane closures. The construction schedule is subject to change based on fieldconditions and construction progress.
