Update: Closure Of Southbound Appian Way Over Crossing

Tentatively scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday August 10, 2026

Contra Costa County — Caltrans has updated the traffic management after emergency shut down the southbound direction of the Appian Way Over Crossing to conduct a detailed inspection and repairs. One lane of the westbound I-80 Appian Way off ramp remains closed, and left turns from westbound Interstate 80 (I-80) are not permitted. Additionally, Caltrans has closed the northbound Appian Way left turn lane to the westbound I-80 on ramp for the safety of our workers and the motoring public. The closure is tentatively scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, August 10, 2026.

Detour Details:

Detour SB Appian Way:

  • Westbound I-80 travelers will take the Fitzgerald/Richmond Parkway exit
  • turn left cross over the overpass then keep straight to access the western end of Fitzgerald or reenter I-80 Eastbound
  • take the Appian Way exit to access the eastern end of Fitzgerald and Appian Way.

Detour NB Appian Way to Westbound 80:

  • From NB Appian Way take the I-80 Eastbound to Pinole Valley Road Exit
  • Turn left at the light
  • Turn left on the I-80 westbound on ramp.

Important Notes

  • Caltrans has turned on Changeable Message Signs (CMS) to notify the public and are activated on Westbound Interstate 80 (I-80).
  • No estimated time for reopening.
