Schedule: New signal light timing at 17th Ave/Bovet Rd and El Camino Real to start June 1

San Mateo County ― Caltrans has partnered with the City of San Mateo to take immediate and long-term traffic safety measures to increase pedestrian safety at the intersection of El Camino Real and 17th Avenue/ Bovet Road in the City of San Mateo. The sequence of the signal and crosswalk lights at this intersection will change on Monday, June 1 at 6 a.m., resulting in delays to the traveling public. Drivers can expect longer wait times in the southbound direction of El Camino Real and the westbound direction of 17th Avenue.

The updated signal timing will add an exclusive east-west pedestrian phase. This fully separates pedestrian crossings from vehicle movements during the walk cycle and reduces the likelihood of serious collisions. Caltrans will continue to monitor the signal timing and traffic flows.

We thank the public for their input on the project. This is an interim enhancement while the Caltrans Traffic Safety team designs and implements long-term safety enhancements to this heavily traveled corridor.
