San Francisco County ― Caltrans announces the cancellation of the weekend freeway work originally scheduled for March 20–23, on U.S. 101 Bayshore (Hospital Curve) between 17th Street and 4th Street. This work has now been rescheduled to the weekend of March 27–30.

This schedule adjustment is part of the ongoing U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway (Hospital Curve) Rehabilitation Project, a multi phase effort to upgrade pavement, enhance safety features, and improve drainage and median barrier infrastructure along this heavily traveled corridor.

Rescheduled Closure Details (March 27–30)

Crews will implement lane reductions beginning Friday, March 27 at 11:00 p.m. through Monday, March 30 at 6:00 a.m.

  • Two fast lanes in both northbound and southbound directions will be closed to provide a safe work zone buffer.
  • At least two lanes will remain open in each direction throughout the work period.
  • Motorists should anticipate delays, consider alternate routes, and allow extra travel time.

Detour Map for Motorists Traveling from and to San Francisco Airport and Rental Car Center

A dedicated detour map has been prepared for travelers departing from and to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and the SFO Rental Car Center who are heading toward the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge and/or San Francisco destinations.

The map illustrates the preferred routing during the closure of the fast lanes between Candlestick Point and Silver Avenue.

Detour from Downtown San Francisco, take I-280, go through I-380 and come back onto Southbound US-101. Detour from SFO, take I-380 going into I-280 and come back onto US-101 around Bernal Heights on the Northbound side.

  • Construction activity day and night
  • Noise and lighting in the work zone
  • Local street congestion near 17th St., 9th/10th St., 5th St., and 4th St.
  • Delays on freeway approaches into downtown San Francisco

Why This Work Is Necessary
The Central and Bayshore freeway viaducts are 71 years old and carry thousands of vehicles daily near the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge corridor. With constant exposure to heavy traffic loads, weather, and seismic demands, the structures require timely rehabilitation to prevent further deterioration. Performing this work now allows Caltrans to address critical maintenance needs, preserve the existing infrastructure, and ensure continued safety for motorists, commuters, pedestrians, and cyclists traveling through and beneath the structures.
