Weekend off-ramp closure set to begin at 11:00 p.m., February 20

San Francisco County ― Caltrans has planned a weekend closure of the 4th St. off-ramp at the Eastbound Interstate 80 (EB I-80) freeway beginning Friday, February 20, 11:00 p.m. to Monday, February 23, 6:00 a.m. The closure is necessary to allow construction crew to safely install a 3-foot deck replacement and a longitudinal bridge joint. This construction work is part of a broader two-year project to rehabilitate the Central/Bayshore freeway viaducts which began in January.

During the closure, 7th St. will the last exit to San Francisco before entering the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Motorists traveling EB I-80 on the Bayshore Freeway to reach the SoMa neighborhood, Oracle Park, Chase Center, Moscone Center, Yerba Buena Gardens, and other San Francisco destinations should take the 7th St. exit.

Motorists who miss the exit should proceed on the EB I-80 to Treasure Island and follow directions to San Francisco via Westbound I-80. See detour map.

Drivers should continue on EB I-80 to Treasure Island Off-ramp (Left Lane); then proceed to NB Treasure Island Rd; take EB Macalla Rd; use the On-ramp to WB I-80; take WB I-80 to 5th St Off-ramp (Left Lane); then take EB 5th St; turn onto NB Bryant St.

Why This Work Is Necessary

The Central and Bayshore freeway viaducts are 71 years old and carry thousands of vehicles daily near the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge corridor. With constant exposure to heavy traffic loads, weather, and seismic demands, the structures require timely rehabilitation to prevent further deterioration. Performing this work now allows Caltrans to address critical maintenance needs, preserve the existing infrastructure, and ensure continued safety for motorists, commuters, pedestrians, and cyclists traveling through and beneath the structures.

Driver and Community Benefits

Once complete, the project will:

  • Preserve and extend the life of the viaduct structures
  • Improve ride quality and driving comfort
  • Enhance overall freeway safety
  • Provide safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists traveling near and beneath the viaducts
