Contra Costa County — Caltrans District 4 will begin maintenance and safety upgrades along eastbound and westbound Interstate 580 (I-580) between Bayview Avenue and the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge Toll Plaza. Multiple lanes, including on and off ramps, will be closed on Tuesday, December 2nd for westbound I-580 and Wednesday, December 3rd for eastbound I-580 between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM, both nights, for sign installation. This work marks the initial phase of the I-580 Richmond–San Rafael Bridge Corridor Enhancements Project. These upgrades will support improved traffic flow, enhanced safety, and more efficient toll operations along this vital Bay Area corridor.

Project enhancements include:

  • Converting an existing general-purpose lane into a High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane
  • Removing the existing toll booths and installing new toll gantries east of the current toll plaza
  • Constructing a dedicated toll gantry and realigning the westbound Stenmark Drive on-ramp
