SUNOL / ALAMEDA COUNTY – Caltrans has scheduled to begin work repairing Niles Canyon Road (State Route 84) between Old Canyon Road and Main Street in Sunol the week of June 17, 2024. A new bridge on piles will be constructed at the location of the slip-out in the eastbound direction where a portion of lane collapsed into the creek four months ago.
Work will be performed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. Full closures will be in effect while work is being performed. Motorists should detour via Interstate 680 during these hours.
The roadway will reopen with one-way traffic control every morning.
Work is scheduled to complete by the end of the year. Every effort will be made to open both lanes of Niles Canyon Road (SR-84) as soon as November if possible. Unforeseeable events such as rain will affect the schedule.
One-way traffic control has been in effect on Niles Canyon Road since February when the ground under the road deteriorated, causing a portion of the highway to collapse.
