(Two lanes will remain open while the drill is underway)

San Francisco — Caltrans has scheduled partial lane closures on the upper and lower decks of Interstate 80 (I-80) Bay Bridge starting at 5 AM, Sunday June 2, until 12:01 PM. The seven-hour closure allows First Responders teams from Caltrans, California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Francisco Fire Department, Oakland Fire Department, and San Francisco Water Department, to safely access the bridge and tunnel to conduct a thorough fire drill and testing of Yerba Buena Island’s new fire sprinkler system.

Motorists will always have access to open lanes throughout the morning.

Bay Bridge Lane Closures Schedule and Highlights:

Westbound I-80:

  • Upper deck westbound lanes #4 and #5 will close from the county line to the Yerba Buena Island tunnel. After passing the tunnel, lane #4 will reopen. Lane #5 will remain closed.

Eastbound I-80:

  • Lower deck eastbound lane #1 will close from the San Francisco approach to the county line.
  • Increase to two lane closure: lane #1 and #2, from the county line to the lower Yerba Buena Island tunnel.

Note: This exercise will be limited to testing out Bay Bridge Standpipes (Hydrants) and radio communications with fire personnel during the drill.

Images and video of the drill will be shared on Facebook, X , and Instagram.

Traffic Control Measures:

Changeable messages and directional signs will be in place to assist motorists traveling in the area. During the closures, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be at the sites.

Please drive with caution. Slow for the Cone Zone and Be Work Zone Alert. Caltrans thanks motorists for their patience while we work to maintain our state’s highways, bridges, and tunnels.
